They are tokenistic and do nothing to support or help carers in their caring role. Very few professionals offer them because no real training is given to them and they are unable to fill one in correctly, because of lack of training. Lots of carers do decline to have one carried out; because a high percentage no nothing happens it's a process which is done because the governments say so. The carers strategy never changes it's the same every year and nothing ever happens in real terms to help. We save this government billions and get totally nothing back it's just a lip service and it's about time that we carers down tools to make them sit up and realize just what we really do. Many carers care for more then one person it's a hard and demanding job and about time we got paid.

My reply may not get to you as it is moths on...
I had a carer's assessment as I was desperate for any help and didn't want to turn it down when it was offered. I have to say, someone there for me for that one hour was helpful at the time. I agree, it changed nothing. I don't have time to talk to people in support groups. I asked only for my son's needs to be addressed. If they were, I wouldn't need support.
Sad isn't it that carer's assessments are often completed in isolation. A more holistic and meaningful direction would be useful.

September 2010
I received a telephone call from an officer of the SS asking if she could visit me to update my carers assessment.

Not Verbatum

G G- Sorry I cannot remember having filled in a carers assessment

SS Officer--We did it over the phone

GG-You may well have done, but I cannot remember the conversation, please send me a copy.

SS Officer--OK.

GG-One did arrive and the content was sketchy, not correct and so I telephoned the SS officer to explain her carers assessment was wrong

SS Officer--If you tell me what is wrong I can correct it whilst we are speaking.

GG- I have no intention of jumping through anymore hoops to satisfy this so called carers assessment.

What is more, there is not enough money for basic care never mind extra care should your assessment say it is needed for the 15% of carers the SS have identified as being carers.

From what I have been reading the SS are aware there are another undetected 85% out there. This being the case and the SS not having enough money to deliver appropriate help to the people you already have on your books. What is the point of a carers assessment for the 15% of carers the SS have identified?.

Until the authority starts keeping accurate records in all areas of the SS, ring fencing finances and sacking incompetent officers. Nothing will change. A good place to start, would be to sack the person who has his name on the top of your assessment form

Although you have my name on your list, you must know I do not receive any services from the SS and so I have no intention of filling in your SS carers assessment form.

What needs to be done is carers should be paid the minimum wage from 1999/2000-The tax year the minimum wage came in. Carers could then network and provide real care in the community.

I trust you are writing down what I have said for your records.
