Hi
I am on Income Support and claiming Carer's Allowance for my daughter who is severely disabled and in receipt of HCR and LMR of DLA.
My daughter suffers from ADHD & ODD which means that she is difficult to live with because of her tendency to violent outburst and continual arguments and oppositional behaviour.
I asked my Local Housing (Council) if they could re-house her due to her behavioural problems but that I would continue to care for her as I still support her with everything, as she needs a lot of help.
They could not give her a place to live as she is not allowed anything but shared accomodation rate. (even though I excplicity told them she was a danger to herself and others and is vulnerable)!
I decided to go through a Private Landlord and got her a 1 bedroom house but the rent is costly in this area £425 month.
Housing Benefit will only cover £55.00 week towards this rent and my daughter has been told she will have to pay the shortfall out of her DLA.
This is totally unfair. She is not awarded full Housing Benefit because she is under the age of 22 years!
I have been told that I must give up my Carer's Allowance in order that my daughter may get an Income Support Top-up as she is in receipt of Incapacity Benefit as she has been told she is unfit for work and unemployable.
I have therefore had to give up my Carer's Allowance for her sake. So now I am an upaid Carer.
This should be changed! It is unfair to the Carer and the person the carer looks after!

Susan,
Carers Uk have a helpline, you will find details here
http://www.carersuk.org/Information/Findinghelp/CarersUKadviceline
They can advise regarding the matters you have mentioned, especially the benefits. Your daughter and yourself will also be entitled to being assessed by local social services.
Again if you look at this link
