Whoever thought that once a person reaches retirement age that their caring role would stop should try doing what we do day in day out.

Again , the Social Wage covers this " problem " by rewarding pensioners with a " premium " ..... doubled if that pensioner also is disabled.

yes, if your a pensioner who is also caring for somebody and your income is low enough to receive pension credit then you do receive a carers premium. however, if your income is £1 over the limit for PC, you are still caring, but do not receive either CA or the premium. it is not often said, but this premium is only in the region of £26, a long way off even the meagre CA.

Under the Social Wage , problems like the one described above would simply disappear ... to the dustbin of history.

Michael's story

The idea is simple enough. You work when you are young and fit and then, when you are old you retire and rest.

Not necessarily so. My partner became very ill. She is significantly younger than me, so it was rather unexpected, but we made the most of our situation. Then diagnoses were made and it became clear that this was a permanent situation.

Then I became permanently ill myself, so my partner lost her carer. Where was my care now that I needed one ? Two carees but no carer ? It doesn't compute.

Agree with all your comments, another point applicable ,if state pension is more than the limit,as in my wifes case, because the DWP engouraged women to buy back years to increase their state pension.
The result now penalized because her state pension is more than the care allowance, also loses out for other benefits pensioners credit, council tax, etc
