We have recently had my mum assessed for care and have been told she does not qualify as classed as moderate needs. We are appealing against the decision but all takes time.If we lived in the LA next to us she would have qualified as they still provide care for those in moderate category.

I'm sorry to hear this. I wish I knew how you can fight it. We are a very new group and still trying to find out where these terrible cut backs in the eligiblity criteria are falling. It is just more cuts by another name. We have a section in the campaign group where we are looking at this problem so please come and tell us more about it.

Hi, Jacqueline,

Thank you for sharing your problem.

For those who don't know the system, each local authority has the right to assess the level of need of anyone within their boundaries who applies for care. This assessment can determine the needs of the person in question as being critical, substantial, moderate or low. The final decision as to which category is supported financially is left up to the local authority.

Harrow Council recently lost a court battle to limit fiancial support to those with only 'critical' needs. Most councils will only support those with critical or substantial needs. The basic government principle says that all who need help must get it.

We need to ensure a nationally-agreed standard on assessments and financial support, and we need to ensure proper funding for our local authorities who are expected to subsidise their care budget from Council Tax.

Jacqueline, do let's know how you get on.

Jacqueline,

I presume your Mum is a pensioner. Contact your local Age Concern. They will be able to advise you, and support you at meetings or with letters of support. If she has a specific health problem, get the appropriate charity for that involved too. My husband is having a problem with the local Visual Impairment department of Social services. I contacted the RNIB for advice, and they are offering much more support than I realised they would be able to.

Hi Jacqueline
Sorry to hear that your Mums health has become worse. Hope things improve now that you are receiving (belated) help. If only these so called professionals would listen sooner rather than later a great deal of misery and difficulties could be avoided.
